Form a Team

Inclusivity in teamwork

Building inclusive team habits that support equality, diversity and respect.

Practical tools for adopting inclusive practices in interdisciplinary teamwork. Activities use the A-E prompts to help students recognise their responsibilities and the benefits of supporting equality, diversity and inclusion.

Form a Team

Belbin

Using Belbin role profiles to make teamwork inclusive.

Belbin role profiles are introduced as a way to understand preferred team behaviours and their relevance to inclusive collaboration. The material covers completing a role assessment, interpreting the profile and recognising how different roles influence individual contribution and overall team dynamics.

Understand the Context

Context Analysis

Select and apply tools to understand the context.

The content builds on STEEPLE analysis and presents three alternative tools: Hofstede Dimensions, Stakeholder Analysis, and Porter's Five Forces. Their use cases, advantages, and drawbacks are outlined so decisions can be made about their applicability to a project.

Define the Problem

Goal Setting

Structured goal-setting strategies to drive progress, purpose and measurable success.

This contents introduces five evidence-informed goal-setting frameworks; SMART, HARD, CLEAR, WOOP and OKRs. The contents explains how each supports different aspects of personal, academic and engineering project success. You will explore how goals can be developed measurable, motivating, collaborative or adaptable depending on context, and how each model helps clarify priorities and overcome obstacles.

Plan the Project

Cybersecurity

Key principles to protect systems, data and users.

The content introduces core cybersecurity principles, including confidentiality, integrity and availability, and explores the common threats that affect digital systems. Defence-in-depth strategies and practical examples illustrate how layered protections reduce risk and support secure engineering practice.

Plan the Project

Project Management

Principles, tools and methods for effective project planning and delivery.

Introduction to the foundations of project management. You will explore the key components of projects, compare major project management approaches, and gain practical experience with SCRUM, backlogs, sprints, and Gantt chart planning. Realistic scenarios including “Developing a Student Attendance App” guide you through applying concepts to real-world project challenges.

Evaluate the Concept

Sustainability Assessment

Assessing a design using life-cycle thinking and the triple bottom line.

Evaluating sustainability uses a structured, life-cycle-based framework to examine the environmental, social and economic implications of a design. The approach includes system mapping, baseline definition, hotspot analysis, simplified impact estimation and KPI scoring. It supports transparent comparison with a baseline and highlights trade-offs and uncertainties to inform more sustainable design decisions.

Evaluate the Concept

Inclusive Design Assessment

Tools and practice for inclusive engineering design.

The principles and practice of inclusive design, focusing on how engineers understand diverse user capabilities, analyse tasks and environments, and apply structured tools to reduce unnecessary capability demands. Drawing on approaches from the Inclusive Design Toolkit (Cambridge, 2007). Personas, scenarios, and capability-assessment methods are used to develop skills to assess, improve, and critically evaluate inclusive design solutions.

Communicate the Solution

Extended Presentation Skills

Refining content and delivery for time-constrained presentations.

The content builds on introductory presentation skills by outlining what to include or avoid in short presentations, supported by examples. Guidance is provided on managing nerves and using pace and pauses to improve engagement and emphasise key points.
