Rich picture
In this session you will begin working on your project. You are in the design phase, where you need to carry out background research to understand the context in which your solution will operate. A video and presentation will be delivered by the facilitator introducing a tool used to visualise the complexity of a design problem’s context, called a Rich Picture. For the remainder of the session, you will conduct research and illustrate your findings by creating a Rich Picture for your project.
Understand the Context 14:00 15:30
Staff-led
STEEPLE analysis
A STEEPLE analysis is a framework that helps you consider your background research through a variety of lenses, ensuring you have thoroughly investigated the context. In this session you will use the STEEPLE Group Learn site to work through the teaching material about STEEPLE analysis and understand how to apply the framework. For the remainder of the session, you will perform a STEEPLE analysis for your project. When completed, you should add both the Rich Picture and the STEEPLE analysis to your group report. You can download the group report template from the assessment page Group Report Template.

TEAM MEETING
In this student-led first session of the day, your team should review the progress made yesterday and look ahead to understand the plan and deliverables for the rest of the day. Discuss how you are working as a team. Are you making good use of the inclusive teamworking skills you developed on Monday? How will you work and divide tasks today? Will one member of the team act as leader for the day, and should this be a rotating role?
Define the Problem 09:30 10:30

SMART Questions
In this phase of the design process, you need to articulate a precise engineering design brief. The hub facilitator will deliver a video and presentation on what a SMART question is and how to apply it to a design problem. Your hub facilitator will be available to help if needed. You will use the remainder of the session to develop a SMART question for your project. You will need to add your SMART question to your report during this session.

Proposing and Building
The next phase of the design process is to generate conceptual ideas to fulfil the design brief. Use the Group Learn site to work through the material in your groups and understand the behaviours of proposing and building during teamwork and idea generation. This will provide you with a structured methodology for brainstorming. Use the remainder of the session to generate conceptual ideas for your project, and add the most feasible ideas to the appropriate section of your group report.

Decision matrix
In the next phase of the design process you will need to select one of your conceptual designs. There may be competing viewpoints and different advantages to different solutions. In this session your facilitator will present a design matrix tool to help you objectively decide which conceptual design to take forward. For the remainder of the session, you will apply a decision matrix to select your final conceptual design and add this design matrix to the appropriate section of your group report.

Develop detailed design
Now that your final design has been selected, you need to develop the engineering details of the product, such as its size, shape, manufacture, operation, and end-of-life disposal. Some questions to prompt your thinking have been prepared for you. During this session your faculty staff member will be available to support you. Once your detailed engineering design has been developed, you should add it to the appropriate section of your group report.

TEAM MEETING
In this student-led first session of the day, your team should review the progress made yesterday and look ahead to understand the plan and deliverables for the rest of the day. How did the interim presentation go? What feedback did you receive, and how can you use this to improve for the final presentation on Friday? Today will involve considering the logistics of your project and evaluating its ethics, inclusivity, and sustainability. Will one member act as leader for the day, and is this a different person from yesterday?

Risk management
Your final conceptual design may be a product or a service. However, you will typically need a business or organisation to prototype, test, build, distribute, and provide customer support. This is the point where an engineering design becomes a project, and a project needs to be planned. The hub facilitator will deliver a presentation introducing the key concepts of project planning. Use the remainder of the session to apply this knowledge and begin outlining a project plan for your design. Add this material to the appropriate section of your group report. Your hub facilitator will be available to help if needed.
