Welcome to the Introduction to Evaluating Inclusivity Course

Aim

This teaching material aims to give you the language and tools needed to design with inclusivity in mind and to evaluate how inclusive an existing design is. It introduces the key ideas and frameworks used to evaluate inclusivity in engineering design. It begins by outlining the responsibilities, benefits, and importance of supporting equality, diversity, and inclusion. It then explains the three major design approaches: accessible design, universal design, and inclusive design, supported by clear definitions and examples. Finally, it presents a step-by-step method for analysing how inclusive a design is, covering product demands, user capabilities, and design decisions, and demonstrates this process through a worked example using a reusable water bottle.

Learning Outcome

Evaluate an engineering design's ability to function in an inclusive and accessible manner.

  • Recognise the responsibilities, benefits, and importance of supporting equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Identify the range of inclusivity and accessibility requirements for a range of stakeholders.
  • Evaluate an engineering design solution's ability to function in an inclusive and accessible manner.
