Engineering students in lab coats discuss an experiment

In the lab: introducing the experiment

To help us explain what makes a good technical engineering report, we decided to film a typical engineering experiment that we can refer to as we make our way through the course.

We investigated the effect of temperature on the impact toughness of steel using the Charpy impact test.

In this video, you’ll have the opportunity to watch the experiment for the first time. As you watch the video, make a note of the types of information you would want to include in an Introduction.

Remember that the purpose of an Introduction is to:

  • Provide background information on the subject.
  • Reference work that has already been conducted on the same subject.
  • Give aims and objectives for your work.
  • Communicate the reasons why the work is being conducted.

We’re going to quiz you on this on the next step!
