About Engineering You're Hired
Dates: 2nd - 6th February 2026
Engineering You're Hired (EYH) is all about developing the skills that will make you a highly employable engineer, and being able to evidence those skills. You will do this by getting some experience of working in the way of a professional engineer, and facing some of the challenges often faced in the real workplace. This will help you in the future when employers ask you about how you work on application forms and at interviews.
As well as the technical skills you are developing through your studies, an employer is likely to want you to be able to display a range of other transferable skills showing that you can:
- Work effectively - can you set your own goals, making sure you tackle the key problems to achieve your aim? Can you manage your time so that you meet deadlines?
- Work with your colleagues - can you cooperate with a team to achieve a common goal? Can you explain your technical knowledge to non-specialists? Can you interpret and take into account factors outside of your specialism in reaching a decision?
- Work with a client - can you understand the factors of importance to industry, not just the technical goals? Can you produce work of a high standard even under pressure and shifting deadlines (or goals)?
Some of the transferable skills that you should be able to show you possess by the end of your degree are summarised below:
- efficient planner - e.g. being able to plan, prioritise and manage your own workload
- flexible team worker - e.g. being able to influence and work well with others
- entrepreneurial - e.g. being creative and innovative, and able to understand and manage risk
- critical thinker - e.g. analytical and showing interest beyond your own discipline
- technically competent - e.g. being confident in applying your knowledge and skills to authentic challenges
- accomplished communicator - e.g. by listening and communicating with technical and non-technical audiences
- culturally agile - e.g. being able to work in diverse cultural settings
- knowledgeable about global affairs
The Engineering You're Hired week will give you an opportunity to develop examples of when you have shown these skills that you can tell employers about.
There will be prizes for the best presentations!
*It is not expected that groups will develop a full technical solution or design to "solve" the problem as there will not be enough time in the week. Instead, you should research existing solutions and produce outline ideas / solutions showing consideration of, and adaptation to the wider social, ethical and sustainability issues associated with the community.
Top performing six teams will be selected to participate in the Engineers and Scientists in Business Fellowship (ESBF) competition to win prizes.

You will select your preferred projects in advance of the project week. On the basis of this information and with the need to have multidisciplinary groups, you will be indicated your project and group before the challenge. When you first meet your group, you will be led through activities that help you to begin engineering a solution.
Read the project briefs and once you know what you want to work on, use the google form in your e-mail inbox to tell us your preferences.
Information for Industry Mentors
We're putting together the plans for EYH 2026 and will share more information ahead of the event. In the meantime, if you would like to express interest and be amongst the first to receive information, please complete this brief google form.
Engineering You're Hired! is a multidisciplinary project week for second year Engineering students which builds on the first-year project week, Global Engineering Challenge.
Working in multidisciplinary teams, students combine their knowledge to tackle a real-life problem to develop their planning and design skills. Student groups aim to take their proposed solution to the proof-of-concept stage towards the end of the week.
Our Industry Mentor days form an important part of this innovative project week, giving the students a valuable opportunity to engage with alumni and industry contacts who can share their expertise and advise on their projects.
We're looking for alumni and industry contacts working in the Technology and Engineering industries, to support students at the Engineering You're Hired event.
Your role
- Share your insight and career experiences with students
- Provide feedback on student projects and presentations
- Take part in a discussion panel with the students
- Showcase your company and talent spot for graduate opportunities
We're also looking for alumni and industry contacts working in senior leadership and management positions to support the final Industry Mentor Day. This is a key highlight of the week, giving students a valuable opportunity to engage with senior alumni and industry contacts who can share their expertise and advice, bringing their real-world experience to assess student projects.
